"It is not an exaggeration to say that play is as basic to a child’s total development as good food, cleanliness, and rest." - Joanne E. Oppenheim
Every school celebrates its Sports Day and, to this all, the children very longingly look forward to.
The 21st of December was earmarked for the occasion this year, as, at this time, the weather is congenial for a long span of games on the field. As the day approached, the entire school premises bustled with a lot of activity and there was a lot of overtime beyond the scheduled hours of routine work.
Weeks before the Sports Day, children started giving their names for different events, and then, practices started. The children, who did not participate in any events, got other duties like making of relevant charts, making lists of games and participants, preparing props required for the cultural show, preparation of the invitation cards, distribution of the cards to the students, dignitaries& other schools in the locality. while others were selected as volunteers.
It was obvious that something was on for, at least for a fortnight before the event, studies were put as if on the hold, except of course for the STD X. The rest of the school was seen bustling with enjoyment and merriment for all enjoy such events.
All the children, all the teachers and even all the other non-teaching staff seemed to be busy with some work or the other. This is because everyone - yes, everyone is assigned a duty to see that the Day passes off well.
After a fortnight of being over busy with the preparations for the Sports Day, at last the day arrived. The lawns at the College of Medicine ground were so very meticulously done up, white chalk powder lines were installed for different events. Victory stands were beautifully done up to make the victors feel proud of being there after the events.
All the children were so well groomed in their respective House uniforms that, it was a sight to watch and admire. To cap it all, the staff members were also very smartly dressed specially those involved with the different events - they blended so well with the smart children that, the total effect was just smashing.
The day started with the usual Assembly and then, all students were instructed to go to their allotted tents on the lawn, class wise. There were volunteers from the senior children who guided the smaller ones to their respective places and soon all was set as per the plan.
The Guests of Honour, Dr. Nirupam Biswas (OSD & E.O. JNM Hospital, Kalyani) and Prof.Dr.A. Zaman (ex-Dean, BCKV, Kalyani), and Chief Guest, Mr. Arindam Deb (ex-Indian footballer) arrived, and the Chairman, Secretary and Principal went out to receive them. There was a March Past by the four Houses (Red, Blue, Yellow & Green) with all its grandeur and the Chief Guest was given the Guard of Honour. He was then taken to the dais and as soon as hewas settled, the Principal said a few words to introduce the guest to all, and requested him to say a few words and declare the Sports open.
The Chief Guest declared the Sports Day open, and then and there were the Cultural Shows by each of the four Houses. Each House had chosen a theme and this they displayed through their dance and drills. The colourful show mixed with the passionate performance of the participants was a treat for the eyes. Everybody sat awe-struck at the display of extreme skill and balance of the little kids fluttering the National Flag on top of the pyramid!
One by one the events took place in a very well disciplined manner and the winners listed. The events involving the little kids of the Preparatory classes were really worth mentioning. Goodness me! Who would believe that these tiny-tots are so smart these days!!! The events that attracted the attention of all were the 100 m sprint for the seniors and the Inter-House (4 x 100 m) Relay races for the Boys and Girls.
There was a short break for refreshments. Students queued up for their lunch packets. The games resumed soon after this. The games and Sports lasted for about three hours. Sometimes two or more events had to be run simultaneously to deal with the constraint of time, as the events for the parents & guardians had also to be accommodated. There was a huge turnout of parents and relatives of students and staff as all were invited on this occasion.
And then came the most interesting moment of the function - the moment of appreciating the winners by awarding them with gifts and prizes, cups and shields. This is the ultimate moment of pleasure for winners when, amidst loud clapping and shouting of cheers, they were made to stand on the Victory Stand and cheered by one and all, theygot their rewards for their good work - from the Chief Guest.
Yellow House was the overall Winner with the maximum points. Green House was the Runner-up.
In the March-past, Blue House was the winner followed by the Yellow House.
In the cultural show, Green House was the winner followed by the Yellow House.
To conclude, days of planning, hard work by one and all, support upto the hilt by the School Management and enthusiastic participation of the parents/guardians, all cooked together made the Day extremely successful and worth remembering. The Day has passed and we all have moved forward but the thrill, the excitement, and then, the pleasure of winning are all moments worth seeing and enjoying.I love to see ourstudents and others participating with their hearts and souls with a complete involvement in the games. Their victory boosts up even my morale.
